The Zweifaller and Rotter Forests, along with the FFH area Solchbachtal, represent the largest protected areas under the management of the Biologische Station of the StädteRegion Aachen (BSAC), covering an area of 2,657.86 ha. A variety of rare biotope types are to be optimized as outlined in existing management plans. The optimization efforts should primarily focus on bog forests, riparian forests, swamp forests, flowing waters, springs, moors, and wet and damp grasslands. The indirect drainage of the Vicht catchment area into the River Rhine is a significant aspect of the BSAC's connection to the INTERREG program, highlighting the broader environmental impact of this initiative. Deforestation measures targeting non-native tree species were implemented between 2000 and 2009 through an INTERREG project. New proposals include further removal of spruce forests and converting these sites to near-natural forests. While this measure does not directly address reduced flooding risks through nature-based solutions, it contributes to overall ecological health. Additionally, closing drainage ditches at various sites and restoring streams would enhance water retention across large areas.
