The Municipality of Plombières
The Municipality of Plombières
With its exceptional geographical location at the heart of the Aachen–Liège–Maastricht triangle, Plombières lies at the crossroads of Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands, making it the ideal starting point to explore the Three Borders region.
Nestled in a green landscape of pastures and wooded valleys, the municipality of Plombières welcomes visitors with its rich history and traditions. The municipality and its villages of Gemmenich, Moresnet, Sippenaeken, Hombourg and Montzen cover an area of 5,382 hectares.

Pilot projects NDTS
The municipalities of Plombières, Raeren, Welkenraedt and Dalhem are implementing pilot projects based on NDTS (Natural Designed Technical Solutions). The municipality of Plombières coordinates this work package.
Plombières will implement two innovative NDTS solutions to protect villages exposed to flooding.
Nature-based solutions
These solutions include upstream flood retention, temporary infiltration areas, wetland restoration and the planting of shrub strips.
Restoration of the Göhl (Gueule) and its tributaries
The river Göhl (Gueule) has experienced significant flooding in recent years. To address this, feasibility studies and the re-meandering of tributaries (Bempt, Soue, Vivier, Broekerbach) are planned. In addition, the restoration and re-meandering of the river’s sources will be carried out. Measures will also be taken to reduce bank erosion and manage downstream flow.
Addressing these challenges requires intensive planning and close cooperation between different stakeholders.
