Municipality of Raeren

The Municipality of Raeren

Raeren is a Belgian municipality with approximately 11,000 inhabitants, located on the border with Germany. It is a rural municipality where several watercourses originate, including the Göhl. Although there are no major rivers within the municipality itself, Raeren was also affected by the floods of 2021. The municipality is known for its liveable landscape and its strong connection to the surrounding cross-border region.

Pilot projects NDTS

Within Sponge Work Package 2, the municipalities of Plombières, Raeren, Welkenraedt and Dalhem collaborate on pilot projects based on NDTS (Natural Designed Technical Solutions).

These projects focus on developing and implementing nature-based solutions to address both heavy rainfall and periods of drought, in close cross-border cooperation.

Nature-based solutions

Through Sponge, Raeren explores opportunities to implement solutions that help retain water in the landscape and reduce flood risks. These measures may include water retention, infiltration and landscape-based interventions that strengthen the natural system and improve resilience.

A cross-border approach

The floods of 2021 highlighted the importance of cooperation across borders. Water does not stop at administrative boundaries. For Raeren, Sponge offers an important opportunity to strengthen both local measures and cross-border collaboration, contributing to a more resilient and liveable region.

Project locations

At this stage, specific project locations within Raeren are still being determined.

Once confirmed, these locations will be shared and added to the Sponge project map.
