The Municipality of Welkenraedt
Welkenraedt is a Belgian municipality located in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, close to the borders with Germany and the Netherlands. The municipality combines a strong local identity with an active role in regional cooperation, particularly in relation to environmental challenges and sustainable development.
Pilot projects NDTS
Within Sponge Work Package 2, Welkenraedt collaborates with the municipalities of Plombières, Raeren and Dalhem on pilot projects based on NDTS (Natural Designed Technical Solutions). These projects focus on developing and implementing nature-based solutions to better manage water in the landscape.
Nature-based solutions
Through Sponge, Welkenraedt explores measures that help retain rainwater, reduce flood risks and improve resilience to drought. These nature-based approaches contribute to a healthier landscape and support long-term water management.
A cross-border approach
As part of the Euregio Meuse-Rhine, Welkenraedt recognises the importance of cross-border cooperation. Water challenges do not stop at administrative boundaries. Sponge provides a framework to work together with neighbouring municipalities and partners on shared solutions.
Project locations
At this stage, specific project locations within Raeren are still being determined.
Once confirmed, these locations will be shared and added to the Sponge project map.
