The landscape park Grenzeloos Bocageland
The landscape park Grenzeloos Bocageland
Bocage Landscape Park forms the green heart between Aachen, Liège and Maastricht. It is a historic agricultural landscape, shaped over thousands of years. Rolling hills, hedgerows and small valleys define the area. Here, the bocage landscapes of the Flemish Voer region, the Walloon Land of Herve and the Dutch Heuvelland merge into one connected landscape. The park covers seven municipalities across Belgium and the Netherlands.

Role in Sponge – Work Package 1
Within Sponge, Bocage Landscape Park is the lead partner of Work Package 1. This work package focuses on three cross-border micro-basin living labs, bringing together local stakeholders to work on shared solutions for drought and flooding.
Living labs and cross-border cooperation
The goal is to develop three basin-level action plans by October 2028. The living labs are located in the river basins of:
- Berwinne (BE)
- Voer (BE/NL)
- Geul (NL/BE)
The approach is based on upstream–downstream solidarity: what happens upstream affects downstream areas.
Co-designing nature-based solutions
Together with partners and local actors, the park supports the co-design of nature-based solutions. These solutions help retain water, reduce flood risks and improve resilience to drought. By working across borders and at landscape scale, Sponge contributes to a more resilient and connected region.
